More Than an Ultrasound Scan
At many ultrasound clinics, the scan is performed separately and the images or report must later be reviewed by a doctor.
At Phoenix Women’s Health, your pelvic ultrasound is performed by the consultant gynaecologist caring for you. The doctor can consider the scan findings alongside your symptoms, medical history and examination during the same visit.

When a Gynaecology Ultrasound May Be Recommended
The appointment may be suitable if you are experiencing:
- Pelvic or lower abdominal pain
- Heavy, irregular or painful periods
- Bleeding between periods
- Post-menopausal bleeding
- Abdominal bloating or pelvic pressure
- Suspected ovarian cysts or uterine fibroids
- Fertility or menstrual-cycle concerns
- Symptoms requiring investigation during perimenopause or menopause
- A previously identified gynaecological condition requiring review
Persistent or unusual symptoms should be medically assessed. An ultrasound is one part of the investigation and may not identify every possible cause.
What Can Be Assessed During the Scan?
Depending on your symptoms and clinical needs, the consultant may assess:
- The uterus and its position
- The endometrial lining
- The ovaries
- Fibroids
- Ovarian or pelvic cysts
- Polyps or other visible abnormalities
- Certain ultrasound features associated with adenomyosis or endometriosis
- The position of an intrauterine device
- Changes requiring monitoring or further investigation

Pelvic and Transvaginal Ultrasound:
The consultant may recommend:
– Transabdominal ultrasound
performed over the lower abdomen, usually with a full bladder.
– Transvaginal ultrasound
performed internally to provide a more detailed view of the uterus, endometrium and ovaries.
