Pregnancy Care – Questions Women Often Don’t Get Properly Answered
Clear, practical answers based on early, proactive pregnancy care.
1. Do I need private pregnancy care if I am already under the NHS?
No — private pregnancy care is often used alongside NHS maternity services.
Many women choose private care early in pregnancy to establish reassurance, confirm that the pregnancy is developing normally, and receive guidance at a stage when NHS appointments may not yet be offered. Private care allows closer monitoring, early intervention where appropriate, and time to discuss concerns in detail.
2. How early in pregnancy should I see a doctor?
The appropriate timing depends on your symptoms, medical history and reason for seeking an appointment.
For reassurance, an early pregnancy ultrasound is generally more informative from around six weeks, although dates can vary and a scan performed too early may be inconclusive. A repeat scan or pregnancy-hormone blood tests may sometimes be recommended.
If you experience pain, bleeding, dizziness, faintness or shoulder-tip pain—or have previously experienced an ectopic pregnancy—seek medical advice promptly rather than waiting for a routine appointment.
3. Why do you recommend regular pregnancy check-ups, even if I feel well?
Pregnancy changes throughout each trimester, and some concerns may not cause obvious symptoms at first. Regular antenatal appointments provide opportunities to discuss your physical and emotional wellbeing, review any symptoms and assess whether further tests, scans or specialist advice may be appropriate.
Private appointments at Phoenix can provide additional time, reassurance and consultant support alongside—not instead of—your NHS maternity care. The timing and frequency of any additional appointments should be based on your individual medical history and clinical needs.
4. What if I experience bleeding in early pregnancy?
Bleeding in early pregnancy does not always mean pregnancy loss, but it should be medically assessed.
Depending on your symptoms and stage of pregnancy, assessment may include an ultrasound scan and pregnancy-hormone blood tests. These can help establish the location and development of the pregnancy, although a repeat scan or further blood tests may sometimes be required.
Progesterone treatment may be recommended in specific circumstances—for example, following confirmation of an intrauterine pregnancy in women experiencing bleeding who have previously had a miscarriage. Your doctor will advise whether this is appropriate for you.
Seek urgent medical advice if you experience bleeding with pain. Call 999 or attend A&E if the bleeding is heavy or accompanied by severe abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, dizziness or fainting.
5. Are private pregnancy scans and early checks safe?
Yes. Ultrasound scans and blood tests are widely used, safe, and well-established tools when performed appropriately by trained clinicians.
We follow medical guidelines and use investigations only when clinically justified, focusing on reassurance, safety, and informed decision-making.
6. Can you support me if I’ve had previous pregnancy loss or complications?
Yes. We regularly support women who have experienced:
- Previous pregnancy loss
- Early bleeding or hormonal concerns
- Anxiety following difficult pregnancy experiences
Care is sensitive, individualised, and focused on both medical and emotional reassurance, with close monitoring where appropriate.
If any of these situations resonate with you, our clinicians are available to advise you and discuss the most appropriate next steps.
